Samsung Portable SSD T9

The T9 is a rugged, well-supported external SSD that delivers 2,000MB/s on the right PC, but Mac users and anyone without a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port will only get half that speed.

What we like

  • +Up to 2,000MB/s sequential read and write on Gen 2x2 ports
  • +Capacities up to 4TB in a 122g body
  • +Rated to survive drops from up to 3m
  • +Dynamic Thermal Guard helps avoid heat slowdowns
  • +Both USB-C to C and USB-C to A cables included
  • +Five-year limited warranty and AES 256-bit password protection

What could be better

  • −Macs and many laptops lack USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, so speeds drop to around 1,000MB/s
  • −Premium price compared with 10Gbps drives
  • −Rubberised finish attracts dust
  • −Warranty is limited by written data as well as years

Best for: Windows video editors and creators with USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 ports

Samsung's Portable SSD T9 launched in late 2023 as a faster, tougher step up from the popular T7 range, and it remains Samsung's top portable drive in 2026. The pitch is simple: up to 2,000MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, capacities up to 4TB, and a rubber-armoured body built for location shoots.

This Samsung T9 SSD review is based on Samsung's specifications, published tests and owner reports. The key message: the T9 is an excellent drive, but whether you get its full speed depends almost entirely on the port on your computer.

Design and durability

The T9 is about the size of a thick credit card holder and weighs roughly 122g. Its textured rubber coating gives good grip when you are handling it with cold or wet hands, although it does collect dust and lint in a bag.

Samsung says the T9 survived drops from up to 3m in internal testing. There is no official water or dust rating, so treat it as drop-resistant rather than weatherproof. The box includes two short cables, USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A, so it works with older computers out of the box.

Samsung T9 speed: what USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 means

The headline 2,000MB/s requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) port, a cable that supports it and UASP mode. Samsung's own figures come from a desktop PC with a Gen 2x2 port. Gen 2x2 is common on recent Windows desktop motherboards and some laptops, but it is not universal.

Here is the catch that many buyers miss: Apple Macs do not support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, even through Thunderbolt or USB4 ports. On a Mac, the T9 falls back to 10Gbps and delivers roughly half its rated speed, similar to a T7 Shield. Many Windows laptops, including some with USB4, behave the same way. Check your computer's port specification before paying extra for the T9.

When connected properly, the T9 is very quick for copying large video files, and Samsung's Dynamic Thermal Guard is designed to limit heat-related slowdowns during long transfers. Samsung states that the casing stays below 60°C under its test conditions.

How to get full speed from the Samsung T9

Because the T9's top speed depends on the whole connection, a few checks make a real difference. First, look up your computer's port specification: you need a port labelled USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 or 20Gbps. Thunderbolt and USB4 ports do not automatically include Gen 2x2 support, so check the manual rather than relying on the port shape.

Second, use the supplied USB-C to USB-C cable or another cable rated for 20Gbps. Third, make sure UASP mode is active, which it is by default on modern Windows systems. Finally, keep the drive's firmware up to date with Samsung Magician. If any link in the chain is slower, the T9 still works, but at the speed of that slowest part.

  • Port: USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps)
  • Cable: the included USB-C to USB-C cable or a 20Gbps-rated one
  • Driver mode: UASP enabled
  • Software: latest firmware via Samsung Magician

Compatibility: PCs, Macs, iPhones and consoles

Samsung lists compatibility with Windows PCs, Macs, Android devices, game consoles and high-end cinema cameras. It also publishes test results for recording Apple ProRes directly to the T9 from iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro models, including 4K at 120fps on the iPhone 16 Pro. Some systems may require you to reformat the drive first.

The free Samsung Magician app for Windows, macOS and Android lets you set a password with AES 256-bit encryption, check drive health and install firmware updates.

Capacity, warranty and value

The T9 is available in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB versions. The 4TB model is a strong option for people who shoot high-bitrate video and want one drive for a whole project. Samsung backs the T9 with a five-year limited warranty, which, as with most SSDs, also depends on how much data you write.

Pricing sits at the premium end of portable SSDs, and memory prices have been volatile in 2026. If your computer only supports 10Gbps, a cheaper drive such as the Samsung T7 Shield will perform about the same for less money.

Samsung T9 vs T7 Shield

The T7 Shield uses 10Gbps USB and tops out around 1,000MB/s, but it adds an IP65 dust and water rating. The T9 is about twice as fast on Gen 2x2 ports, but it lacks an IP rating. On a 10Gbps port, the two perform similarly.

  • Choose the T9 if: your PC has a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port and you move large files daily
  • Choose the T7 Shield if: you use a Mac, need water resistance or want to save money
  • Consider a USB4 or Thunderbolt SSD if: you are a Mac user who wants more than 1,000MB/s

Who should buy the Samsung T9?

The T9 is best for Windows-based video editors, photographers and gamers who have confirmed Gen 2x2 support and need fast, rugged storage. iPhone Pro users recording ProRes will also appreciate its tested compatibility. For Mac-only workflows, it is still a solid drive, but you are paying for speed you cannot use.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Samsung T9 fast on a Mac?

+

Not at full speed. Macs do not support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, so the T9 runs at 10Gbps and delivers roughly 1,000MB/s. It still works well, but a cheaper 10Gbps drive or a Thunderbolt/USB4 SSD may be better value.

How fast is the Samsung T9?

+

Samsung rates it at up to 2,000MB/s sequential read and write. To reach that, your computer and cable must support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) and UASP mode.

Does the Samsung T9 work with iPhone?

+

Yes. Samsung has tested it with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro models for ProRes video recording, including 4K at 120fps on the iPhone 16 Pro. Connect it with the USB-C to USB-C cable.

What is the difference between Samsung T9 and T7 Shield?

+

The T9 supports 20Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 for up to 2,000MB/s and is rated for drops of up to 3m. The T7 Shield uses 10Gbps for about 1,000MB/s but has an IP65 dust and water rating.

Is the Samsung T9 waterproof?

+

No official water or dust rating is listed. It is designed to be drop-resistant up to 3m, so keep it away from rain and liquids.

What warranty does the Samsung T9 have?

+

Samsung offers a five-year limited warranty. As with most SSDs, the full terms also consider how much data has been written, so check Samsung's warranty page for your region.

The Samsung T9 is one of the best portable SSDs you can buy if your computer has a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port. It is quick, tough, well supported and available in useful capacities. The only real trap is compatibility: Mac users and many laptop owners will get half the speed, so check your ports first and buy the drive that matches them.
