A strong business card for owner-run companies that spend a lot on cards and want points and many free employee cards, held back by an annual fee and patchier acceptance than Visa or Mastercard in Germany.

This American Express Business Gold Card review focuses on the German version of the card, which Amex positions as a flexible business credit card for entrepreneurs who want more liquidity and more perks. It sits between the entry-level Business Green Card and the premium Business Platinum Card, and targets self-employed people and owner-run companies with up to about 10 million euros in annual turnover.

We have not held the card ourselves. This review is based on American Express Germany's published card terms and comparison tables, plus general knowledge of how Amex cards work in the German market. We look at the fee, rewards, payment options, insurance and whether the card is worth it for your business.

Annual fee and additional cards

The Business Gold Card has a mid-range annual fee, and Amex currently waives it for the first year. At the time of writing, Amex also advertises a starting credit for new cardholders; such offers change, so check the current terms before applying.

The standout benefit is additional cards. You can add up to 99 extra cards at no additional fee, which makes the Business Gold Card attractive for companies that want to give employees their own cards. By contrast, the Business Green Card charges for its first additional card, and the Business Platinum Card bundles up to 98 Business Gold additional cards into a much higher fee.

Membership Rewards points

Every euro spent earns one Membership Rewards point, and additional cards collect points into the same account. Membership in the programme is included in the fee, unlike on the Business Green Card, where it costs extra.

Points can pay for card transactions after the fact or online purchases, be used for travel booked through Amex, exchanged for vouchers or donations, or transferred to airline loyalty programmes. American Express Germany states that it pays the flat-rate tax on rewards, so redeeming points does not create a tax burden for you. As with any points programme, you get the most value from travel transfers rather than shopping vouchers.

Payment terms and spending power

The Business Gold Card does not have a fixed credit limit. Instead, Amex sets an individual spending power based on your needs and history, which helps with larger one-off purchases. Card spending is settled from your euro bank account in a SEPA country.

Amex now lets Business Gold cardholders choose to pay up to 50 days later, which can smooth cash flow between buying and getting paid. Read the conditions for this option carefully, as payment deferral features can come with conditions or costs. The Business Platinum Card offers up to 58 days.

Insurance, extras and acceptance in Germany

Amex describes the Business Gold insurance as extended cover. It includes transport accident insurance when you pay for public transport with the card, travel comfort cover for delayed flights or baggage, foreign travel health insurance and a Europe-wide car breakdown cover. Rental car collision cover is also listed. Exact limits and conditions are in the insurance terms.

Extras include an annual credit with Dell Technologies, discounted airport lounge access, 24-hour worldwide service, the GlobalAssist emergency helpline, free replacement cards and access to the Amex B4B Marketplace for finding business partners.

The biggest practical drawback is acceptance. American Express is widely accepted by airlines, hotels, car rental firms and large retailers, but many smaller German shops, restaurants and trade suppliers accept only girocard, Visa or Mastercard. Most businesses that use an Amex card therefore keep a Visa or Mastercard as a backup.

Business Gold vs Business Green and Platinum

The Business Green Card is cheaper but charges extra for rewards and additional cards and has standard insurance only. The Business Platinum Card costs several times more but adds lounge memberships, travel and mobility credits, a private Platinum Plus card and longer payment terms. For most small businesses, Business Gold is the best balance of cost and benefits, especially if several employees need cards.

How to get the most from the card

The Business Gold Card pays off best when you move as much regular business spending onto it as your suppliers allow. Software subscriptions, travel, hotels, advertising and large online retailers usually accept American Express, and every euro earns a point. Giving employees their own free additional cards means their spending earns points into the same account, while you keep separate statements for each card.

For redemptions, transferring points to airline programmes or paying for travel through the Amex travel portal generally gives better value than shopping vouchers. You can also use points to offset recent card transactions if you prefer simplicity. Keep an eye on current welcome offers and the first-year fee waiver, as they make the first twelve months especially good value.

Finally, check the insurance terms before you travel. Some cover only applies when you pay for the trip or ticket with the card, so booking business travel on the Business Gold Card is the easiest way to make sure you are protected. The Amex DE app shows spending, points and statements on the go.

Is the Amex Business Gold Card worth it?

If your business spends a meaningful amount by card each month and you can use the points for travel, the rewards alone can offset the annual fee, and free employee cards add real value. If your spending is low, you mostly buy from small local suppliers, or you just need a card for occasional online purchases, a free business debit or credit card from your account provider is the simpler choice.

A practical approach for many German businesses is to pair the Business Gold Card with a free debit or credit card from the business account. Use the Amex wherever it is accepted to collect points and insurance cover, and fall back on the other card for smaller merchants. That way you get the rewards without being caught out at the till.

+

You earn one Membership Rewards point per euro spent, and additional cards earn points into the same account. Membership in the programme is included in the annual fee.

Is American Express widely accepted in Germany?

+

Acceptance is good at airlines, hotels, car rentals and large retailers, but many smaller German shops and restaurants do not take Amex. Carrying a Visa or Mastercard as a backup is sensible.

+

Applicants must be at least 18 and have a euro bank account in a SEPA country. The card is aimed at self-employed people and owner-run businesses up to roughly 10 million euros in annual turnover.

The American Express Business Gold Card is one of the more rewarding business cards in Germany in 2026 for companies with steady card spending. Points on every euro, up to 99 free additional cards, flexible payment timing and a solid insurance package make a strong case. Weigh that against the annual fee from year two and the fact that not every German merchant accepts Amex, and keep a second card for those moments.
